Background of the Study
Small-scale industries form a vital component of the economic landscape in Kogi State, providing employment and contributing to local development. However, these industries often operate with limited resources and less formalized safety protocols compared to larger enterprises. Consequently, workers in small-scale industries are frequently exposed to hazardous conditions that may result in workplace injuries. Studies have shown that factors such as inadequate training, poor machinery maintenance, improper use of equipment, and substandard working environments contribute significantly to occupational injuries (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2023). Given the diversity of small-scale enterprises—from food processing units to artisanal workshops—understanding the specific causes of workplace injuries in these settings is crucial for developing targeted interventions that can enhance worker safety and reduce injury rates.
Statement of the Problem
Workplace injuries in small-scale industries in Kogi State remain a persistent challenge, adversely affecting both employee well-being and business productivity. Many small-scale businesses operate without robust occupational health and safety policies, and workers are often untrained in safe operational practices. The informal nature of these industries frequently leads to a lack of accountability and inadequate enforcement of safety standards. This results in a high incidence of injuries, which in turn contribute to lost workdays, reduced economic output, and increased financial burdens on both workers and employers. Despite the significant impact of these injuries, there is limited systematic research identifying the underlying causes and quantifying their effects in this sector.
Objectives of the Study
1. To identify the primary causes of workplace injuries in small-scale industries in Kogi State.
2. To assess the role of inadequate safety training and equipment in contributing to injury rates.
3. To recommend practical interventions and policy measures aimed at reducing occupational injuries in these settings.
Research Questions
1. What are the most common causes of workplace injuries in small-scale industries in Kogi State?
2. How do factors such as inadequate training and poor equipment maintenance contribute to these injuries?
3. What interventions can be implemented to mitigate the risk of injuries in small-scale industries?
Research Hypotheses
1. Inadequate safety training and lack of proper equipment are significantly associated with higher rates of workplace injuries in small-scale industries.
2. Poor maintenance of machinery and hazardous working conditions contribute substantially to occupational injury rates.
3. Implementation of targeted safety interventions will reduce the incidence of workplace injuries in small-scale industries.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on small-scale industries operating in urban and semi-urban areas of Kogi State. It will primarily examine injury records, safety practices, and worker perceptions through surveys and interviews. Limitations may include potential underreporting of injuries due to the informal nature of these industries and variability in safety practices across different sectors.
Definitions of Terms
